Roller blinds, in short

One fabric, one clean roll, sized to your window.

A roller blind is a single piece of fabric on an aluminium tube that you raise and lower with a chain or a motor. Ours are made to measure in Australia on Rollease Acmeda hardware: you choose the light level, the fabric and colour, the fit and the control, and the price updates as you go. Most are dispatched within 8 to 15 business days, and every one comes with a 5-year warranty.

  • Sizes: 300 to 3,000 mm wide, 400 to 3,000 mm drop
  • Fit: inside the opening (recess fit, 60 mm of depth needed) or on the wall (face fit)
  • Fabric: 12 ranges across blockout, light-filtering and sunscreen
  • Control: a chain is included, or choose one of 6 battery and wired motors
  • Double roller: two blinds on one bracket, a blockout and a translucent blind

Blockout, light-filtering or sunscreen?

Pick the light level first. The fabrics follow.

It's the first question the configurator asks, because it decides the fabric list. Not sure? Order a sample of each and hold them up to your window, day and night. Order free samples

Blockout

Stops light coming through the fabric and gives full privacy, day and night. On a recess fit a little light shows down the sides, so face-fit it wider than the window, or add a pelmet, if you want the room properly dark.

Suits: Bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, west-facing rooms

10 ranges, 122 colours: Vibe, Focus, Sanctuary, One Block, Jersey, Le Reve, Skye, Metroshade, Linesque, Balmoral

Light-filtering

Softens daylight into a glow and gives daytime privacy without darkening the room. It's a daytime fabric: for privacy at night in a bedroom, choose blockout or a double roller.

Suits: Lounge rooms, dining rooms, studies, kitchens

7 ranges, 64 colours: Sanctuary, Jersey, Balmoral, Le Reve, Skye, Linesque, Metroshade

Sunscreen

An open weave that cuts glare and UV while you keep the view. It's see-through after dark with the lights on, so bedrooms usually pair it with a blockout on a double roller.

Suits: Lounge rooms with a view, kitchens, home offices, north and west windows

2 ranges, 22 colours: Kleenscreen, One Screen

Blockout and blackout mean the same thing. Blockout is the word used in Australia.

Roller and double roller

Two roller blinds, priced as you design them.

Tap Customise, enter your width and drop, and watch the price change with every choice. A double roller puts two blinds on one bracket: sunscreen for the day, blockout for the night.

Measuring

Two numbers, and one decision before them.

Decide where the blind sits, then measure the width and drop in millimetres with a steel tape. The measuring guide shows exactly where the tape goes.

  1. 01

    Recess fit or face fit?

A recess fit sits inside the opening for a built-in look. It needs at least 60 mm of depth (125 mm for a double) and leaves a slim strip of light down each side. A face fit mounts on the wall or architrave and overlaps the opening, which cuts the edge light. It's the usual choice for bedrooms.

    Recess or face fit, explained
  2. 02

    Measure the width and drop

In millimetres, with a steel tape, at three points each. For a recess fit, use the smallest measurement. For a face fit, add about 50 mm each side so the blind overlaps the opening.

    Open the measuring guide
  3. 03

    Check it's in range

We make roller blinds from 300 to 3,000 mm wide and 400 to 3,000 mm drop. A very wide opening often works better as two blinds side by side.

  4. 04

Want a second check on your numbers?

Tick the Perfect Fit Guarantee in the configurator (+$19 a blind). Before we make anything, we video call you to check your measurements, window by window. If a covered blind still arrives the wrong size because of a measuring error, tell us within 14 days and we make it again in the same fabric, with delivery both ways covered. Up to five blinds per household.

Chain or motorised

Pull a chain, or press a button.

Both are in the configurator, and the price updates when you switch.

Chain, included

Pick the side it hangs on (left or right, as you look from inside the room) and a colour: white, black or grey, or silver nickel (+$5) and stainless steel (+$15). Every chain blind comes with a chain tensioner, supplied to meet Australia's mandatory safety standard for corded window coverings.

  • Included in the price you see
  • Left or right, as you look from inside the room
  • 5 chain colours
  • Chain tensioner supplied, with screws for it

Suits: most windows you can reach

Motorised

Choose Motorised, then battery or wired. Battery motors recharge and need no electrician. A wired motor needs power at the window, so it suits a new build or a renovation. There's no cord or chain at the window at all.

  • Acmeda Automate E6 wired motor (wired, +$335)
  • Acmeda Automate Wire Free 1.1 Nm battery motor (battery, +$393)
  • Somfy Altus RTS 3 Nm wired motor (wired, +$411)
  • Acmeda Automate Wire Free 2.0 Nm battery motor (battery, +$428)
  • Somfy Sonesse 30 Wire Free 2 Nm battery motor (battery, +$441)
  • Somfy Sonesse RTS 3 Nm wired motor (wired, +$560)

Remotes and switches: Acmeda Push 5- or 15-channel, Somfy Situo 1 or 5 RTS, or a Somfy Smoove wall switch. Already have one? Choose "No Remote".

Finishing touches

The small choices, all in the configurator.

Defaults are set for you, so change only what matters to your window.

  • Roll direction: back roll, with the fabric closest to the glass, or front roll
  • Bottom bar: oval, flat, or a silent bar (+$8 per metre of width)
  • Bracket and fittings colour: white, black or grey
  • Bracket depth: standard 45 mm, or a 55 mm extension (+$10) to clear handles and architraves
  • Pelmet: 100 or 120 mm, metal (natural anodised, pure white or black) or fabric-wrapped. It hides the roll and closes the light gap at the top
  • Two blinds, one bracket: that's a double roller blind

Need a replacement part? Spare parts for roller blinds Spare motors

What's the difference between blockout and blackout blinds?

Nothing but the word. Blockout is the Australian term and blackout is the American and British one: both mean a fabric that stops light coming through. How dark the room gets depends on the fit, so face-fit the blind wider than the window, or add a pelmet, to cut the light at the edges.

Blockout, light-filtering or sunscreen: which should I choose?

Blockout for rooms you sleep in, light-filtering for soft daylight and daytime privacy, and sunscreen to cut glare while you keep the view. Sunscreen and light-filtering fabrics don't give privacy at night with the lights on, so a street-facing bedroom usually gets blockout or a double roller.

What are the downsides of roller blinds?

A recess-fitted roller leaves a slim strip of light down each side, one fabric gives you one light level, and a very wide blind gets heavy on a chain. A face fit, a double roller or a motor fixes each of those.

How do I measure for roller blinds?

Decide first whether the blind sits inside the opening (recess fit) or on the wall (face fit). Then measure the width and drop in millimetres with a steel tape, at three points each: for a recess fit use the smallest, for a face fit add about 50 mm each side. Our measuring guide shows where the tape goes.

Can I install roller blinds myself?

Yes. Each blind hangs on two brackets: screw them in, click the blind into place and fit the chain tensioner. Screws aren't included, because brick, timber and plasterboard each need different fixings, and our install guide walks through face fit and recess fit.

Are motorised roller blinds worth it?

They are for high or hard-to-reach windows, rows of three or more blinds, and kids' rooms where you don't want a chain. Choose Motorised in the configurator, then a battery motor that needs no electrician or a wired motor for a new build or renovation.

Are double roller blinds worth it?

For a bedroom that faces the street, usually yes. A double roller puts two blinds on one bracket, typically sunscreen for the day and blockout for the night, and it needs at least 125 mm of depth to fit inside the opening.

How long do custom roller blinds take?

Most roller blinds are dispatched within 8 to 15 business days, because each one is made to your measurements in Australia. Delivery is calculated at checkout from your postcode, and free samples post separately so they never hold up an order.

How much do roller blinds cost?

It depends on the size, the fabric and how you operate it. The configurator prices your blind as you design it, so you see the total before you order, and the product cards on this page show today's starting price.
