Roller vs roman blinds: which suits you?

Choose a roller for the slimmest look, sunscreen fabric, a lower price or a motor. Choose a roman for a softer, finished look that folds up at the top.

Roller or roman?

Rollers suit bathrooms, kitchens, media rooms and wide windows. Romans suit bedrooms, lounge rooms and studies, where the blind is part of the look.

Price

Which costs less?

A roller, for the same window. On 27 Sep 2026, a 1,200 × 1,500 mm blockout roller was $153.01 and a blockout roman $381.35.

A roman uses more fabric for its folds, and more hardware to lift them.

Fit

Inside or outside the window?

Recess fit means inside the window opening. Face fit means on the wall or frame around it.

  • Rollers go either way. Inside needs at least 60 mm of depth. Outside, on the wall, blocks the most light.
  • Romans usually go outside the opening, so the folds don’t catch the frame as they rise. Inside works in a deep, square recess.

Romans

The downsides of roman blinds

Three things to weigh up.

  • The stack. A raised roman sits as a band of folds at the top of the window. Mount it above the frame to keep the glass clear.
  • No motor. Romans aren’t motorised in our range. They run on a chain or a cord.
  • Steam and dust. Folds hold moisture and collect dust, so we keep romans out of bathrooms and kitchens.

Rollers

The downsides of roller blinds

And three for rollers.

  • A plainer look. A roller is a flat sheet of fabric. Many end up behind a sheer curtain for softness.
  • Edge light. Inside the opening, a roller leaves a thin line of light down each side. Fit it on the wall if the room must be dark.
  • Sunscreen at night. Sunscreen fabric is see-through once the lights are on inside.

Are roman blinds out of style?

No. They’re the softer, more finished choice. They suit bedrooms, lounge rooms and period homes, and a plain linen-look fabric sits well in a new home too.

Which blocks more light, a roller or a roman?

Both come in blockout fabric. Fitted on the wall around the window, a roller sits flat and leaves less light at the edges.

Can I motorise a roman blind?

Not in our range. If you want a motor, choose a roller or a double roller.

Can I have a roman blind in a bathroom?

We’d steer you away from it, because the folds hold steam. A roller in a sunscreen fabric, or a PVC or aluminium venetian, suits a bathroom.

Is a roman blind harder to install?

It’s a similar job: brackets or a headrail screwed above or inside the window, then the blind clips on.

Can I see the fabric before I order?

Yes. Order up to 10 free samples, posted free, and hold them at your own window before you decide.

What if I measure wrong?

Add the Perfect Fit Guarantee when you design it (from $19 to $39, depending on the product). We video call you to check your measurements before we make it. If a measuring error means it still arrives the wrong size, we make it again.
