Light levels and fabrics

Pick a fabric range and colour for each curtain. The front is usually the sheer and the back is usually the blockout, but you can swap them. Every swatch in the designer is a photo of the real fabric.

Sheer is a light, see-through fabric: soft light and privacy by day. At night, with the lights on, people can see shapes through it.

Blockout stops light coming through the fabric. A little still gets in around the edges.

Fit

Fit and controls

The track (the rail the curtains hang from) goes on the ceiling, called top fit, or on the wall above the window, called face fit. The ceiling is the cleanest look.

  • Heading: the style at the top of a curtain. Choose S-fold soft waves, double or triple pinch pleat, or pencil pleat for each curtain.
  • Opening: each curtain draws left, right, or as a pair from the centre. The stack, the space a curtain takes up when open, should sit away from the door.
  • Hem and length: a lead-weight hem helps a sheer hang straight, and a 70 mm hem suits blockout. Finish 20 mm off the floor, touching it, or puddled.
  • Track: a hand-drawn double track with a wand, the slim rod you draw the curtains with, in white or black. Or a motorised track.

Measuring

How to measure

You need a steel tape measure and a few minutes per window.

  1. 01

    Width

    Measure the track length, not the window. Go at least 150 mm past the frame on each side, so the open curtains clear the glass.

  2. 02

    Drop

    Measure from the track to where you want the hem.

  3. 03

    Check the size

    We make double curtains from 800 mm to 5,750 mm wide, and 900 mm to 4,000 mm drop.

Motors

Motorised double curtains

Open and close them with a remote. The track is motorised, not the fabric, so any fabric and heading works.

  • Battery track: a Somfy Movelite track, with a charger and a Situo 1 remote. No electrician needed.
  • Wired track: a Somfy Glydea 35e track, with a Situo 1 remote. It never needs charging, but an electrician runs power to the window first.
  • Price: both motorised tracks are priced by width, and the designer adds it as you go.

What are double curtains?

Two curtains on one double track: usually a sheer at the front and a blockout behind. Close the sheer by day for soft light and privacy, and draw the blockout at night.

What else are double curtains called?

Layered curtains, or sheer and blockout curtains. They all mean two curtains on one double track, each drawing on its own.

Which curtain goes at the front?

Usually the sheer, with the blockout behind it, closest to the glass. You can swap them in the designer.

Can each curtain open a different way?

Yes. Each curtain has its own fabric, heading, opening, hem and length at the floor.

How do I measure for double curtains?

Measure the track length: at least 150 mm past the frame on each side. Then measure the drop, from the track to the hem. Both curtains are made to that width and drop.

Can I motorise double curtains?

Double curtains or a sheer over a roller blind?

Both give you a day layer and a night layer. Double curtains are all fabric, soft and full height. A sheer over a blockout roller blind keeps the blockout tight to the glass.
