Lounge room blinds and curtains

A lounge room window needs soft light by day, no glare on the TV and privacy at night. One product rarely does it all, so most lounge rooms use two layers.

What suits a lounge room window

For most lounge rooms, a sheer curtain with a roller blind behind it. The sheer softens daylight, and the roller handles glare and night.

Glare on the TV

A sunscreen roller: a see-through mesh that takes the glare off the screen and keeps your view.

Layers

A sheer over a roller

A floor-to-ceiling sheer on a ceiling track at the front, and a roller blind close to the glass behind it.

  • The sheer stays closed most of the day. It softens the light and stops people seeing in by day.
  • The roller comes down for glare or at night.
  • Both in fabric? Double curtains hang a sheer and a blockout on one double track.

Glare

Glare on the TV

A sunscreen roller is the usual fix. It cuts glare and some of the heat without shutting the room in.

  • A darker sunscreen is easier to see through, and cuts glare harder.
  • A lighter sunscreen reflects more heat.
  • Fit it on the wall around the window, called face fit, so no bright strip shows down the sides.
  • For film nights, add a blockout layer: a double roller or blockout curtains.

Privacy

Privacy at night

Sunscreen fabric is see-through from outside at night, once the lights are on inside.

  • Faces the street? Add a second layer for the evening: a blockout or light-filtering roller, or a curtain.
  • Light-filtering fabric glows and gives privacy day and night, but you can’t see out through it.

Big windows

Big windows and walls of glass

Wide spans need the right product.

  • Curtains cover the widest spans in one piece: our tracks run up to 5,750 mm.
  • Roller blinds go up to 3,000 mm wide each, so a wide window takes two or three side by side.
  • Panel blinds run up to 4,800 mm across a door or a wide window, in the same fabrics as our rollers.
  • Motorised rollers and curtain tracks make tall windows easy. A battery motor needs no electrician.

Warmer looks

Timber venetians and shutters

For a warmer, more traditional lounge room.

  • Timber venetians have real timber slats that tilt for light. Keep them for dry rooms like this one.
  • Plantation shutters give a finished, built-in look on a street-facing window, and tilt for privacy. They don’t darken a room, and they cost more than blinds.

Should a lounge room have curtains or blinds?

Often both. Blinds control light precisely, and curtains soften the room and cover big windows in one piece. If it has to be one, pick by what bothers you most: glare, night privacy or bare glass.

Can people see through sunscreen blinds at night?

Yes, once the lights are on inside. Add a blockout or light-filtering layer, or a curtain, on a street-facing window.

What colour blinds suit a lounge room?

Match the window frame for a quiet look, or go a shade darker than the wall. Hold samples against the wall in daylight and again at night.

How wide can one roller blind be?

Up to 3,000 mm. Wider windows take two or more rollers side by side, or a panel blind or curtains.

Can I motorise lounge room blinds?

Roller blinds, double rollers and curtain tracks can all be motorised, with a battery or wired motor.

Do you come out to measure or fit?

No. We’re an online store: you measure, design and fit, with our guides and a person on 1300 195 797 if you get stuck.

Can I see the fabric before I order?

Yes. Order up to 10 free samples, posted free, and hold them at your own window before you decide.

What if I measure wrong?

Add the Perfect Fit Guarantee when you design it (from $19 to $59, depending on the product). We video call you to check your measurements before we make it. If a measuring error means it still arrives the wrong size, we make it again.
