Bedroom blinds and curtains

A bedroom needs dark at night and privacy in the morning. Blockout blinds and curtains (fabric that stops light) do both, and the fit decides how much light gets round the edges.

Vertical and venetian blinds aren’t on the list. Light gets in between their strips, so they don’t make a room dark.

Fit

How to stop light around the edges

Blockout fabric stops light coming through it. Light still gets in around the edges, and the fit decides how much. Blackout means the same as blockout.

Black blockout roller blind fitted on the wall above a bedroom window

For a blind

  • Face fit means on the wall around the window. Add at least 50 mm each side and fix it at least 70 mm above the opening. It blocks the most light.
  • Recess fit means inside the window opening. It looks neat, but a thin line of light shows down each side. It needs at least 60 mm of depth, or about 125 mm for a double roller.
  • Back roll is the standard: the fabric comes off the back of the roll, closer to the glass.
  • A pelmet is a cover over the roll at the top. It hides the roll and the brackets.

For curtains

  • Fix the track to the ceiling, so light can’t spill over the top.
  • Run the track at least 150 mm past the frame on each side.
  • Take the hem to the floor, or choose puddled.

The darkest set-up is a blockout roller blind with a curtain in front of it.

Choosing

Curtains or blinds?

Either works. It comes down to the window and the look you want.

  • Blinds are compact and sit close to the glass. They leave the wall clear for a bed head or a wardrobe.
  • Curtains soften a room and can cover a whole wall of glass. They need space at the side to stack when they’re open.
  • Both: a blockout roller blind for the dark, with a sheer curtain in front for the look and daytime privacy.

Privacy by day

Bedrooms that face the street

If the bedroom faces the street, you need privacy by day as well as dark at night.

Double curtains in a bedroom: the sheer closed across the glass and the blockout stacked beside it (render)

Double roller blinds

A blockout and a translucent blind on one bracket. Make the translucent blind light-filtering (a soft glow, no view in) for full privacy by day. A sunscreen one (see-through mesh) keeps your view, but at night people can see in.

Double curtains

A sheer and a blockout on one double track. The sheer gives privacy by day. At night, with the lights on, people can see shapes through a sheer, so draw the blockout.

Roller blinds

A light-filtering roller blind on its own gives privacy by day. At night, shapes can show through it.

Child safety

Kids’ rooms and nurseries

Two things matter in a child’s room: dark for day sleeps, and no loose cords.

  • Blockout, fitted on the wall around the window, makes day sleeps easier.
  • A motorised roller blind (run by a remote) has no chain at all, so you can lower it from the doorway.
  • Curtains open with a wand (a slim rod) on a hand-drawn track, or a remote on a motorised one.

Cords must be fitted so they can't hang in a loop within a child's reach. That's Australia's mandatory child-safety standard for corded window coverings, and our install guides show how.

Which blind makes a bedroom darkest?

A blockout roller blind fitted on the wall around the window, with a curtain in front on a ceiling track. On their own, a blockout roller blind fitted on the wall or blockout curtains to the floor come close.

Are blockout blinds worth it in a bedroom?

If you sleep past sunrise, work shifts or have a baby who naps by day, yes. The trade-off is a dark room by day unless you open it. A double roller blind or double curtains fix that.

What are the downsides of blockout blinds?

Light still gets round the edges unless the blind is face fit. Dark colours show dust sooner. And a closed blockout shuts out the view.

Recess fit or face fit for a bedroom?

Face fit blocks more light, because the blind overlaps the wall. Recess fit looks neater, but leaves a thin line of light down each side.

Is blockout the same as blackout?

Yes. Blockout is the usual word in Australia, and blackout means the same thing. Both stop light coming through the fabric.

Can I motorise bedroom blinds?

Roller blinds, double roller blinds and curtain tracks, yes. Roman, venetian and vertical blinds are manual.

How long do bedroom blinds take?

We dispatch it 8 to 15 business days after you order.

Can I see the fabric before I order?

Yes. Order up to 10 free samples, posted free, and hold them at your own window before you decide.

What if I measure wrong?

Add the Perfect Fit Guarantee when you design it (from $19 to $59, depending on the product). We video call you to check your measurements before we make it. If a measuring error means it still arrives the wrong size, we make it again.
