Blinds for sliding doors

A sliding door needs a cover that clears the opening when you walk through. Vertical and panel blinds slide to one side, and S-fold curtains draw back along a track.

The options

The four options, side by side

Stack a blind or curtain away from the side you walk through, and it stays out of the way.

Vertical blinds

  • Vanes: 127 mm, or 89 mm for a finer look on a smaller opening.
  • Fabric: blockout, in the Focus, Vibe or Balmoral ranges. Light still comes in between the vanes.
  • Control: a wand turns and draws the vanes, with no loose cord. Or choose chain and cord.
  • Stack: left, right, to the centre, or split from the centre. Stack them away from the side you walk through.
  • Size: up to 5,775 mm wide and 3,650 mm drop.

Panel blinds

  • Fabric: the same blockout, light-filtering and sunscreen fabrics as our roller blinds, so the door can match the windows.
  • Panels: 2 to 8 on one track. As a guide, divide the width by about 700 mm. We check it before we make it.
  • Stack: left, right, or open from the centre.
  • Size: 800 mm to 4,800 mm wide, up to 3,300 mm drop.

Roller blinds

  • Width: one blind up to 3,000 mm. On a wider door, use two side by side.
  • Fit: on the wall above the door frame, so the fabric clears the frame and the handle.
  • Handles: if one sticks out more than 45 mm, choose the 55 mm extension bracket.
  • Motor: a battery motor saves a lot of chain pulling on a door you use all day.

S-fold curtains

  • Track: run it at least 150 mm past the door on each side, so the open curtain clears the glass.
  • Opening: stack it away from the side you walk through, or choose a pair that opens from the centre.
  • Length: finish 20 mm off the floor, so it clears rugs and the vacuum.
  • Size: up to 5,750 mm of track and 4,000 mm drop. A motorised track (opened with a remote) suits a wide door.

Other doors

Stacker, bi-fold and French doors

Stacker doors

Panel or vertical blinds that open to the same side as the doors.

Bi-fold doors

Fit the blind above the opening so it clears the folded doors. Stack it to the side they fold to.

French doors

A blind on the door itself must stay put when the door swings. Our venetian blinds have hold-down clips: they hold the bottom of the blind to the door.

Measuring

How to measure a sliding door

For most doors, the blind or track goes on the wall above the frame. You need a steel tape and a few minutes.

  1. 01

    Width

Measure the opening. Add at least 50 mm each side for a blind, or 150 mm each side for a curtain track.

  2. 02

    Drop

Measure from where the brackets or track will go to where you want it to finish. Leave a small gap above the floor.

  3. 03

    Handles and locks

Note anything that sticks out into the path of the blind.

  4. 04

    Millimetres, three times

Use a steel tape and measure in three places. Write it down in millimetres.

Can you put a roller blind on a sliding door?

Yes. Fit it on the wall above the door, so it clears the frame and the handle. One blind goes up to 3,000 mm wide, so use two on a wider door, and raise it each time you walk through.

Vertical or panel blinds for a sliding door?

Vertical blinds let you tilt the light and cost less to start, in blockout fabric. Panel blinds give a flatter look, in the same fabrics as our roller blinds. Both open to the side.

Will a blind get in the way of the door handle?

Fit it on the wall above the frame, so it hangs in front of the handle. On a roller blind, choose the 55 mm extension bracket if the handle sticks out more than 45 mm.

Can I motorise a sliding door blind?

Roller blinds and curtain tracks, yes. Vertical and panel blinds are manual.

Do vertical blinds block all the light?

No. The fabric is blockout, but light gets in between the vanes and around the edges. For a dark room, choose a blockout roller blind or blockout curtains.

Can I get plantation shutters for a sliding door?

We make shutters as hinged or bi-fold panels in a frame, not sliding ones. For a sliding door, choose panel or vertical blinds, or S-fold curtains.

How long do sliding door blinds take?

We dispatch it 8 to 15 business days after you order.

Can I see the fabric before I order?

Yes. Order up to 10 free samples, posted free, and hold them at your own window before you decide.

What if I measure wrong?

Add the Perfect Fit Guarantee when you design it (from $19 to $49, depending on the product). We video call you to check your measurements before we make it. If a measuring error means it still arrives the wrong size, we make it again.
