Are blockout curtains right for you

Blockout and blackout mean the same thing: a fabric that stops light passing through it. A little light still gets in around the edges, so the fit matters too.

A bedroom that must be dark
Sleep-ins, shift work and early summer sun. Hang it from a ceiling track (the rail it runs on) and take it to the floor.
How to make it darker
A nursery or kids’ room
Day sleeps in a dim room. A wand (a slim rod) opens a hand-drawn curtain, and a motorised track has no cord.

The downsides of blockout curtains

They need room at the side. When open, the curtain bunches up there, so run the track past the frame.
Closed, they shut out the view. Double curtains add a sheer for the day.
Dark colours show dust sooner. They block light as well as pale ones.

Fix the track to the ceiling
It closes the gap above the curtain, so light can’t spill over the top.

Run the track past the window
At least 150 mm past the frame on each side, so the closed curtain overlaps the wall.

Take it to the floor
Choose touching the floor or puddled, rather than a hem that stops short.

Stack it away from the door
One curtain that draws to one side, or a pair that meets in the middle.

Add a blind behind it
A blockout roller blind on the glass, with the curtain in front, is the darkest set-up.

Fit and controls

Every curtain we make comes on its own track, cut to your width, so the heading and the track always match.

Where the track goes: on the ceiling (top fit) for the darkest room, or on the wall above the window (face fit).
The track: hand-drawn, in white or black, opened with a wand. Or motorised, with a remote.
Opening: one curtain that draws to the left or right, or a pair that opens from the centre.
Hem: choose the 70 mm hem, the classic finish for blockout fabric.
Length: touching the floor or puddled keeps out the most light. 20 mm off the floor clears rugs and the vacuum.

How to measure

Measure the track, not the window. You need a steel tape and a few minutes per window.

Width is the track length
Run the track at least 150 mm past the window frame on each side, so the open curtain stacks off the glass.

Decide where the track goes
On the ceiling for the cleanest line, or on the wall above the window.

Drop is track to hem
The drop is the height to cover: measure from the track to where you want the hem. For puddled, we add 20 mm.

Check the size
We make curtains from 800 mm to 5,750 mm wide, and 900 mm to 4,000 mm drop.

Hang it yourself
The track comes with brackets and instructions. Fix it to the ceiling or the wall, then hook the curtain on. You’ll need a drill and a ladder. Stuck? Call 1300 195 797.

Motorised blockout curtains

Open and close them with a remote. The motor sits in the track.

Battery track: a Somfy Movelite track with a charger and a Situo 1 remote. No electrician, and it charges a few times a year.
Wired track: a Somfy Glydea 35e track with a Situo 1 remote. It never needs charging, but an electrician runs power to the window first.
Price: both motorised tracks are priced by width, and the designer adds it as you go.

Will blockout curtains make my room completely dark?

Not quite: the fabric stops light coming through it, but some light gets round the edges of any curtain. A ceiling track, a track wider than the window and a hem on the floor cut most of it. A blockout roller blind behind the curtain goes further.

Yes. Both words mean a fabric that stops light coming through it.

What do blockout curtains do?

No. Every curtain is made to your track width and drop, from 800 to 5,750 mm wide and 900 to 4,000 mm drop. We dispatch it 8 to 15 business days after you order.

Do blockout curtains keep a room warmer?

They help. Closed, a blockout curtain traps a layer of air between the room and the glass, which does more than a sheer or bare glass. It won’t replace insulation in the walls or ceiling.

Can I get S-fold blockout curtains?

Yes. Choose Blockout, then S-Fold as the heading in the designer. S-fold works for blockouts as well as sheers.

Are blockout curtains good for a baby’s room?

Yes, for day sleeps. A hand-drawn curtain opens with a wand, and a motorised track opens with a remote, so there’s no cord.

How long do blockout curtains take?
