Oak & Orange—renowned interior designers behind the Dream Home series—partnered with Home Blinds Australia to transform a standard 450sqm block project home into Dream Home 6: Cosy Country Cottage. Built on a compact new housing estate site in the outskirts of Sydney, the 27-square home required window furnishings that would bring warmth, softness and country cottage charm while staying within a realistic family budget. The design needed to maximise natural light, provide privacy from neighbouring homes, and complement the home's soft neutral palette of Cotton Ball walls, dado rails, light smoke carpet, and timber finishes throughout.

Achieve a cosy country cottage aesthetic with soft, flowing fabrics and warmth

Work within a tight DIY budget for a home built to sell

Provide full blockout in bedrooms while still maintaining daytime softness and privacy

Hide neighbouring fences and streetscape without losing natural light

Manage strong south and west-facing sun exposure across most windows

Create a consistent, cohesive window furnishing palette across all rooms

Home Blinds Australia supplied a strategic, cost-effective window furnishing solution across Dream Home 6, combining blockout roller blinds with sheer curtains to balance function, style and budget.
In the master bedroom, we installed PVC Plantation Shutters in Australian White, creating a classic country cottage statement piece while providing excellent light control, privacy, and timeless appeal in the main suite.
In all four secondary bedrooms (Bedrooms 2, 3, 4 and the lounge room), we supplied Roller Blinds in Kew 'Natural' paired with S Fold Sheer Curtains in Bali 'Blush'. The blockout roller blinds provided the primary, affordable solution for darkness and privacy at night. The addition of soft blush sheer curtains layered on top meant that when the roller blinds were raised during the day to allow natural light in, the family could still hide the neighbour's fence and maintain daytime privacy—while adding the softness, warmth and country cottage flow that Oak & Orange's design required.
In the main living area, we used the same pairing: Roller Blinds in Kew 'Natural' and S Fold Sheer Curtains in Bali 'Blush', creating a cohesive look from bedrooms through to living zones. The natural-toned roller blinds worked seamlessly with the Nordic Oak vinyl planks and Cotton Ball walls, while the blush sheers added a gentle warmth that elevated the space without overpowering the neutral base.

In the lounge room, Roller Blinds from Home Blinds Australia were specified to provide simple, clean light control in the more intimate family space.
The colour and fabric choices were deliberate: the warm 'Natural' tone of the Kew blockout rollers and the soft 'Blush' sheer curtains perfectly complemented Dream Home 6's country cottage brief. These selections tied in with the home's Solitude painted walls, light smoke carpet, and warm timber accents throughout, creating a unified, inviting aesthetic.
Oak & Orange highlighted that this layered approach—affordable blockout rollers as the functional base, with sheer curtains as the style layer—allowed them to achieve a high-end country cottage look while keeping window covering costs realistic for a family home.
The finished result delivered a calm, light-enhanced interior with the relaxed luxury feel of a Modern Aussie Resort, while offering complete control over light and privacy. The cost-effective blockout roller strategy across most bedrooms freed up budget for the high-impact sheer curtains in living zones, proving that a "save to splurge" approach can deliver designer results without overspending.
Oak & Orange credited Home Blinds Australia as the partner who "helped us choose the right blinds for function, budget, and light in every room," highlighting how the layered window solution elevated the entire Dream Home 5 aesthetic while remaining practical for family living. The consistent White Blockout and Ivory palette unified the home's material story—polished concrete, timber, stone, and Pebble Bay paint—creating a cohesive, resort-inspired family home that balances softness with performance.

Home Blinds Australia's DIY model allowed Oak & Orange to get custom-made, designer-quality window furnishings at a fraction of the cost of traditional measure-and-install services. The result? A charming, functional, cosy country cottage that families fell in love with—complete with window coverings that looked high-end but stayed within a realistic family budget.
As Oak & Orange shared in their Dream Home 6 series, the combination of blockout roller blinds and sheer curtains was the perfect balance: "The blockout roller blinds offer an affordable option... and the addition of sheer curtains in the bedrooms means that when the roller blinds are up to allow natural light in, we still get to hide the neighbour's fence. The softness and colour of these curtains really elevates the space."
